We’ve Caught the Reading Bug!

The summer reading program is in it’s final two weeks. We’ve really had fun learning about insects and other bugs. Our kick-off program was put on by the Orkin Company and our Orkin man, turned out to be an Orkin lady; and she was GREAT!

The Bug-in-a-Bag contest was awesome! We ended up with an infestation of thirty-six very colorful and unique bugs. Everyone picked up a bag of art supplies from the library with which to create their BUG! The judges had their work cut out as they judged these unusual arthropods! Prizes were given for cutest bug, best use of materials, most unusual, biggest pest, most creative, most realistic, and creepiest bug in four different age groups.

During week two of our summer reading program, several young ladies attended the “Lady-Bug Garden Party.” The director’s office was transformed into a lovely garden. Beside a small garden bench, a draw bridge led the ladies through the rose covered archway into the garden of flowers and insects. Here they made ladybug hats, ladybug purses and feasted on ’small flower pots of ‘Dirt Cake with Worms’ and ‘Bug Juice’!

The following week, six brave young men attended our “Creepy Crawly Critters” activities. They designed colorful insect sand art bottles and made their own ‘Roach Coaches’. The giant bugs on wheels were pitted against each other for the fastest, farthest, straightest, and trickiest; both on-road and off-road! The boys were also divided into three teams and had a ‘bug scavenger hunt’; they located and identified bugs that were hidden around the library. Dirt cake with worms and bug juice was served for refreshments.

We are having “The Good, the Bad, and the (B)Ugly” film festival for fourth, fifth and sixth grade boys and girls on July 3rd. Then our end of summer party at the park on July 12th. More to come on these activities!

CRICKETS HOP, WORMS DO NOT!

Our ‘Happy, Hoppy Story Time’ has come to an close, but it won’t be long and we’ll be into our Summer Reading Program here at the Ness City Public Library. The summer reading theme is year is “Catch the Reading Bug!” So chances are we will contiue to find things HOPPING around the library!

Our story time was filled with wonderful stories of hopping creatures. We made wooden bunny and chick bookmarks, mischievous little Leprechaun’s with beards created from our hand prints, Easter Bunny welcome signs to hang on our doors, bright green frog thermometers, Mama Kangaroo puppets with a Joey in her pouch, crickets made from a pocket comb (they even chirp) and beaded bookworms. No, worms do not HOP, but we learn that they help you catch some really BIG FISH! (from the mouths of babes!).

When will my stimulus check arrive?

If you are wondering if you qualify for a ‘economic stimulus’ payment from the Internal Revenue Service and when that check might arrive, the IRS has a chart up on their web site with some specific dates. If you have all ready filed your 2007 tax return, you can also find out just how much that check might be (you will need information from your tax return when calculating this amount). It’s going to be a “Happy, Hoppy Story Time”!

Did you ever think about all the things that HOP? Bunnies HOP! Kangaroos HOP! Crickets and grasshoppers also HOP! Kids can HOP, too! Ness City Public Library will soon be holding their spring story time; and you guessed it, we are having a “Happy, Hoppy Story Time”. We’re going to do all kids of fun activities, crafts, games and songs; as well as read about lots of ‘hoppy creatures’.

We will be having two sessions beginning on Tuesday evening, March 4^th from 7 to 7:45 p.m. and on Thursday afternoon, March 6^th from 4 to 4:45 p.m. We

will run our sessions for six weeks. However due to a summer reading workshop, we will skip the week of March 25^thand 27^th; so our last classes will end on April 15^th and 17^th. This story time is for boys and girl ages 4-6. Parents must enroll their child prior to the start of these sessions. Please stop by the library any time before classes begin. There is no charge for story time, but class size is limited on a first come basis. If you have questions, please call the library at 785-798-3415.

Ness City Public Library has served Ness City and surrounding areas since 1887. There are over 17,00 items in our core collection which consists of fiction, non-fiction, audio books, videos and DVDs, large print books, magazines and area newspapers. We offer numerous services to our patrons such as five public computers, wireless access, a copy machine, fax machine, typewriter and laminator. We deliver to home bound and nursing home residents. We pride ourselves on providing friendly, up to date services and materials for our patrons.
